The Challenge

How can today’s technology help us make the most of our planet's resources?Read the challenge brief

Concepts

Concepting is now finished.
We received over 400 great concepts for re-using existing technologies to combat environmental problems in new ways.
They all fall into one or more of the themes which shone through from the inspiration phase.

The expert panel is now examining the concepts to choose the top ones to move on to evaluation phase which starts December 14th!

Presence-sensing space heaters to focus, target and adjust temperature

IMAGINE a line of space heaters that could focus, target and adjust warmth based on the number, body size and proximity of nearby people, using Sony presence sensing technology, a bank of servo-controlled heating elements, dye-sensitized solar cells and a PSP remote control. Think of the energy this could save.

The solution is in the forests

Given this scenario: a deficiency for clean energy and the problems faced in the preservation of forests, we find a way to positively correlate these points: Why not use the forests for energy? We found three ways: higroeletricidade, methane fuel cells and heat generated in the hydrological cycle. But there are not unique, everybody can participe and contribute with your own idea.

Our focus is primarily on energy and finding creative ways to utilize renewable sources in our daily lives. The fundamental idea is that of promoting renewable energy sources to substitute and in some cases create power sources for our daily use.

Congestion Analysers could measure the amount of cars and the speed of the cars on a road it is situated on and send information to sat navs so they can choose faster and more energy efficient routes to take. They can be sent information from local councils on the weather, local events and accidents so that they will send information to a national network and predict which routes to take in the future and at the present bearing in mind these inputs. They can be solar powered to improve green credentials.

Technologies may give a new, exciting and unexpected impulse in achieving worldwide solutions for two of the biggest problems actually involving environmental care and sustainability: - the problem of waste and rubbish disposal - the problem of electrical energy needs Saving the waste produced by a highly developed urban community against exploitation of criminal organization, and treating it in the best possible way, will allow to produce enough electrical power to cover all the needs of the same community.

Dye sensitized solar cells-EV car port /garage for green energy refuelling for UK/ N. Europe

The Nissan Leaf, car of the year 2010 reflects increasing uptake of EV (electric vehicle) technology & its spread beyond niche use in wider society. EVs eliminate pollutant & green house gas (GHG) emissions at point of use, there remain emissions linked to their use, but at lower levels due to greater efficiencies in centralised generation than ICE’s, so long as electricity is from fossil fuels. This is the case for the majority of the world. Home generation with solar cells strongly mitigates this; however application has been limited by the cost, relative inefficiencies & min. sunlight levels required. Using dye sensitized cells in roofing car ports/ garages for EVs offers a solution to this. It also assists EV technology uptake through lower running costs & allows it use in areas outside the electricity network & supports greater uptake without increased load on the existing supply network. Underlying this is the idea of using one technology to drive the uptake of another.

StreamStation

Working from home reduces commuting, reduces carbon emissions, and can help many people achieve a better work/life balance. However although current technology has made working at home technically feasible for many people, there is one aspect of the office which most miss: the social aspect, the camaraderie, those 'water cooler' moments. In addition, despite the possibilities of applications such as Skype, working in a team is more difficult when the members are physically remote from each other. StreamStation addresses this by re-connecting home workers with their chosen work or social group. It's extremely simple, consisting of 2 flat screens and a webcam/mic which fit onto one corner of the desk, and stream continuous live 'ambient' video and audio feeds from other users' desks to each other. So suddenly your home office or study is part of a cluster, and you're part of a social workspace again!

Using GPS and Geotags to recycle the right way

When it’s time to dispose of, for example electronics, most of us don’t know where to put it and it can sometimes even end up in the wrong waste bin. We want people to find an easy way to access the right location to dispose of their waste. Smartphone applications have the potential to be the perfect tool for increasing recycling rates. By using a smartphone application it is possible to gain information about locations for recycling, through the GPS Platform, as well as information about the waste, using Geotags. The pedagogic of the application should be such that anyone can use it.

Gener-8 - the mass-produced, clean energy generator for daily life.

The Gener-8 is a small, mass-produced generator, designed to harness the vast amounts of energy all around us every day. At the opposite end of the scale from wind-farms and hydroelectric dams, they would be used in great numbers, blending in with the normal infrastructure of modern life.
